Oman Air Recruits a team For Cargo department

Oman Air recently recruited a young and enthusiastic team of 10 Omanis. The trainees underwent an extensive training programme on Ramp Handling and Cargo Handling before joining their respective jobs.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Hammier Al Nabhani, Senior Manager Human Resources of Oman Air, said that the Oman Air is very keen to fill in positions with Omani candidates of the right calibre. "With Oman Air marking its expansion programmes, it was imperative to recruit more personnel into the Cargo Department, which is one of the main areas of operations. We conducted interviews and selected 10 young Omanis including 3 ladies whom we thought were capable and eager to be cargo assistants within the Cargo Department. These cargo trainees went through extensive and intensive training programmes that were conducted by Oman Air’s Training Department," Al Nabhani added.

The training programme was devised in accordance with international cargo standards, and carried out by Oman Air’s highly qualified team of well experienced instructors. Oman Air’s Training Department works closely in evaluating the training needs of each operational area and helps to fill those gaps by training and producing highly efficient and capable young Omanis, thereby supporting the Omanisation drive at all levels.

Corporate Communications and Media Department of Oman Air informed that the recruitment of Omanis at various levels and in various departments is a focus area for the Company. The Omani workforce in the Company they said, have excelled and even exceeded the expectation of the management. Now, more Omani youth are coming into the job scene equipped with the right qualification and willingness to show their mettle, which is indeed a desirable situation for any employer. Oman Air they affirmed recognizes this fact through its pro-active nationalisation policy, CC&M affirmed in conclusion.

It is worth to mention that the Ministry of Manpower recently awarded Oman Air with a commemorative plaque in recognition of its Omanisation efforts in an event that was held under the aegis of HE Maqbool Bin Ali Sultan Minister of Commerce and Industry at Al Bustan Palace Hotel.

Oman Air Takes Delivery Of New b737-800

Oman Air announced the delivery of the airline's thirteenth Next-Generation 737 (SUR), as the carrier undertakes its ongoing fleet expansion. The brand new Boeing 737-800 left Seattle on a shuttle flight that arrived at Muscat International Airport in Muscat, Oman, on Sunday June 7. With additional two deliveries planned for October 2009, this will bring the national carrier of Oman’s B737 fleet to 15 units.

An Oman Air spokesman said, "Oman Air and Boeing have a great partnership, and the proven performance of the new 737 has allowed us to expand that relationship. The high-tech 737 will enable Oman Air to set the regional standard for passenger comfort and operational efficiency in the single-aisle market. With extremely high reliability, easy maintenance and operation, the Next-Generation 737-800 is designed to fit easily into our regional operations," The spokesman concluded saying.

Distinguishing itself as a leader in the region, Oman Air was the first commercial operator in the Gulf to purchase Boeing's new version of the 737. The carrier and Boeing have had a business relationship since 2001, when Oman Air took delivery of a 737-700. The national carrier of Oman utilises their new 737s on routes throughout the AGCC, Middle East, and the Indian sub-continent.

Oman Air Enhances SMS service

In the continuous effort to better the Customer Experience on Oman Air and provide customers with a new and easier channel for accessing information, Oman Air has partnered with Tamimah and Nawras, and is proud to announce a further enhancement to its SMS solution.

The new Oman Air SMS service gives access to scheduling, fare enquiries and booking status. Nawras customers can also use the service to update their local contact details or to make a request ordering a special meal or a preferred seat for example.

From now, Oman Air customers using a Nawras SIM-card will have an option to receive messages on various products and services offered by the airline.

“We urge customers in general and travel agents in particular to ensure their mobile numbers are provided at the time of booking so that passengers can be reached around the clock and 365 days” said Mr. Hamad Saif Al Harthy- Senior Manager Reservation and Global Distribution; of Oman Air. Its is also worth mentioning that in December 2008, Oman Air, the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman launched its SMS notification services which informed customers about any flight schedule changes or cancelations and this has now been extended to a complete and innovative SMS enquiry service.

On his part, Mohammed Al Najwani, Product Manager at Nawras said that the innovative communications provider was proud to be associated with Tamimah and the national carrier and to be the first to launch this important product.

Nawras, which commenced its operations in March 2005, has since pioneered the introduction of many creative new services for its customers such as VoiceSMS, prayer time notification and most recently, the entertaining BawaBaty wap portal.

“Nawras is committed to using the latest technology to bring convenience to customers in a user-friendly way. This service offers great value and a new channel of information to our national carrier, Oman Air,” said Najwani.

Mr. O.K Ravi, General Manager of Tamimah Telecom, the pioneers of the SMS solution provider commented that Oman Air’s SMS Information System is a new service offered to everyone who wants information via their mobile phone about Schedule Enquiry, Seat Availability, Fare enquiry, Flight Information and so on.

A complete list of services and how to use them can be obtained by sending "HELP" to 90910. He also commented that Tamimah is committed to contribute its core technology in the development and growth of Oman towards e-government.

Mohammed Al-Harthy, Chairman of Tamimah said "We believe in innovation and are happy to partner with Oman Air and Nawras in launching this innovative service which is one of the first of its kind in this region.”

Oman Air’s SMS Service is very easy to use. As an example, a customer who would like to check seat availability on a flight from Muscat to Salalah on the 09 July 2009 would send SA MCT SLL 0907 to the code 90910.

To find out the flight cost for the same date, the fare enquiry message would be FE MCT SLL 0907.

The service can even be accessed when travelling outside the Sultanate where international roaming rates would apply.

Oman Air mobile check-in options at Muscat

Travellers flying with Oman Air will soon become the first in the Middle East region to choose from four new and innovative check-in options at Muscat and other key airports.

Oman's national carrier will dramatically improve customer experience by providing four exciting new ways to check-in including using a mobile phone, internet, airport kiosks, and in the airport where customer service agents equipped with mobile check-in technology.

In conjunction with the launch of its Sabre Web Check-In solution, Oman Air will also introduce the ability for customers and travel agents to select their preferred seat and print the boarding pass for the same day return flight on www.omanair.aero.

“Today's announcement demonstrates our commitment to the growth of the Oman Aviation industry, by using emerging technology to help us transform the traveller experience. Our newly-launched range of check-in options is yet another step towards providing a seamless and hassle free air travel experience for our passengers,” said Barry Brown - Oman Air's Vice President Commercial.

“Today's travellers want faster and more convenient ways of checking-in so they can spend less time waiting in airport queues. New technologies like web check-in and mobile check-in also enable travellers to bypass the check-in area altogether if they are not carrying any luggage, further reducing the time needed at the airport. These types of innovations appeal to a traveller and can help build airline loyalty very quickly” added Brown.

The first of Oman Air's new range of check-in options, Sabre Web Check-In, will be available from this month, making it the first airline in the Middle East to offer passengers multiple check-in options from Muscat and other key airports.

Following the launch of Web Check-in, Oman Air will introduce self-service options including Kiosk Check-in and Mobile Phone Check-In as well as an enhanced airport staff check-in solution called Roving Agent Check-In, which enables Oman staff to check-in passengers using mobile-enabled hand-held computers at the airport.

Using Mobile Check-In, Oman Air will be one of the first airlines in the world to offer mobile check-in to their customers.

National Geographic featured Oman as world-class destination

The popular American international magazine, National Geographic Adventure (NGA) has featured Oman as a world-class destination in their December 2008 - January 2009 edition - BEST OF ADVENTURE - World Class: Lodges + Escapes. Renowned travel writer Costas Christ in his report on Oman titled, 'Arabian Oasis – Oman' has eulogized Oman's pristine beauty and world-class facilities.

Oman Air's Corporate Communications and Media Head, Usama Karim Al Haremi, notes that National Geographic Adventure, winner of four American National Magazine Awards, is the fastest-growing magazine in the outdoor category and the ultimate guide to the adventure lifestyle. Published 10 times a year, with a rate base of 600,000, National Geographic Adventure has 2.4 million readers.

Costas Christ is an internationally recognized American expert on sustainable tourism and serves as the Chairman of the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, which recognizes leading examples from around the world of environmentally and socially responsible travel. He is a founding member and former Chairman of the Board of The International Ecotourism Society. He writes a regular column for National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

Says Costas in the recent edition of NGA: "Move over, Dubai - Oman's rugged riches are catching on. When I asked the late explorer Wilfred Thesiger how to retrace his 1949 route across Oman, he recommended setting out during the same month he did, in December. It was sound advice. Winter brings crisp nights and pleasant (read: not hot) days, making it an ideal time to scramble along the Hajar Mountains’ sunbaked wadis and trek across the sand dunes of the Empty Quarter. Oman, as I found, is more than the sum of its desert parts: The country’s 1,300-mile coastline boasts world-renowned diving, and its monarch, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, makes a point of safeguarding traditional cultures and the environment."

Costas also recommends that tourists can go on hikes into the Ru’us Al Jibal plateau—one of the last remaining wild areas on the Arabian Peninsula. Al Haremi highlighted that The Hajar mountain range runs 640 km from the south of Oman to end in the Musandam, where the aptly named Ru'us al Jibal , or Heads of Mountains, plunge dramatically and dizzily into the sea. "While offshore, the sky blue Gulf of Oman draws kayakers into a maze of hidden caves and secluded coves. Sixty-one years after Thesiger’s journey, off-the-beaten-path Oman still awaits discovery. A Must-Do: The month long Muscat Festival kicks off in January. Wander amid clouds of frankincense and myrrh while taking in Arab music, art, and cuisine" Costas writes.

Al Haremi also noted about the positive attention that Oman has been receiving from the travel and trade industry specialists. He brought to notice the comments by G.A.P Adventures, the largest adventure travel company in Canada that is known for their offer of socially and environmentally sensitive travel.

In their Destination Guide on Oman, the simple foreword read thus: "One of only two Sultanates in the world, Oman is like the best theme park version of itself one can imagine. Thanks to the total control of a benevolent leader, Oman is a trip back in time coupled with all the advantages of the future. Cruise past immaculately restored 16th century fortresses, while driving shiny land cruisers on perfect roads. Everywhere traditional flowing dishdashas are the clothes of choice, and there is not a mall in sight. Simply put: one of the best places to experience traditional Arab culture, anywhere."

Al Haremi also noted that Bruce Poon Tip launched G.A.P Adventures in 1990 with the intention of offering travelers authentic adventures in the real world. As of 2008, the company has over 500 employees worldwide and offers more than 1000 adventure tours to over 100 countries on all seven continents. G.A.P Adventures was the only travel arrangement company included in the respected list of Canada's Top 100. G.A.P Adventures is named the number 1 "Do It All Outfitter on Earth" by National Geographic Adventure magazine's survey of Best Adventure Travel Companies in the World.

Furthermore, on the awards front to name but a few, Bruce Poon Tip won The Chinese Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year award, as well as the New Pioneers award in the Entrepreneurship category. National Geographic selects a G.A.P Adventures tour for its 25 Best New Adventures of the Year, marking the sixth consecutive year one of its tours has made the list.

Global Traveller report on Oman tourism

Oman could be the world's best-kept secret, but probably not for long, writes Lydia Moss in her report titled 'OMAN WITH A PLAN' in the December 2008 issue of the US-based monthly magazine Global Traveller. The writer through a lengthy report highlighted the development, progress, and success achieved by the Sultanate in various spheres. Usama Bin Karim Al Haremi, Head of Corporate Communications and Media of Oman Air, focused on the tourism area within the article. Referring to the report by Lydia Moss, a well-known New York-based travel writer, Al Haremi noted that it gave a wholesome idea to the international travellers about Oman, and how it is successfully attracting people from all across the globe.

He notified that The Global Traveller is a business travel publication from the USA that takes into account the sophisticated lifestyle interests of today's executive travellers and is the publication of choice among seasoned business travellers. Global Traveler is the only ABC - audited American magazine for the international business traveller, with ABC paid circulation of 100,000 +. The magazine is also the only ABC audited magazine and independently measured by Media Mark Research (MRI), a dominant voice in media and consumer research in the United States. No other monthly magazine in its category boasts a higher audited circulation or page count.

Al Haremi said that along with portraying the picturesque Oman, the report also brings to light the benevolence of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said's regime. "His Majesty's directives towards enhancement of Oman's tourism potential while adhering to its rich culture and ensuring world-class facilities for tourists are some of the points that have found mention in many international reports, and Lydia Moss's report too mentions this aspect. He added that Today's progressive, modernising, and forward-looking Oman takes its inspiration from the wise policies of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos."
The report reads: "Stunningly situated at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, this erstwhile seafaring country long ago discovered trade routes to the Far East and Africa. Persians, Indians, Arabians, and Portuguese all landed here. It is said that Omanis even clued Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama into the routes, a tip that eventually led to his voyage to the New World. Today, Oman is taking advantage of its plum location and turning to trade and tourism. But unlike its splashier neighbors who are growing at lightning speed, the Sultanate of Oman is being more deliberate in finding the right balance between the ancient and the new."
In her report, Lydia writes that Oman is about the size of Nevada and became independent in the 17th century, when the Portuguese departed. "Modern Oman, however, began in 1970 when Sultan Qaboos bin Said came to power. At the time, the country had four miles of paved roads. Since then, oil revenues have led to a new infrastructure that includes roads, electricity, and water in even the most remote villages.

Qaboos’ reign has been characterized by political stability and the slow transformation of Oman into an emerging, world-class economy that depends increasingly upon diversification. Yet, as Oman grows, it takes steps to protect the invaluable environment. Buildings can be no higher than nine stories, for instance, and they mostly adhere to traditional Islamic architectural style, which serves as a constant reminder that you are in Oman and nowhere else."

On the diversification plans, the report says that with 600 miles of coastline, Oman can capitalize on trade and tourism as it moves away from oil and develops major industrial and transportation ports. "At the southern tip of the country, Salalah is becoming a major container port and industrial zone; with its natural deep water, it is the only port between Europe and Singapore capable of handling the largest container ships. A free zone enables investors to obtain licenses, visas and other tax advantages. In the north, a new port and industrial zone is taking shape at Sohar, which is closer to Dubai than Oman’s capital, Muscat. An opening economy is luring foreign investors with such incentives as a corporate income tax that ranks among the lowest in the region, privatization programs and improved telecommunications.

Al Haremi noted that the report brings to light the great tourism potential of Oman also about the major investments in the hotel, hospitality, and real estate industries. "Oman’s gorgeous, unspoiled beaches remain a largely untapped gold mine for tourism, which grew by 16 percent in 2006 with an emphasis on luxury travel. Oman’s largest and most luxurious getaway, the Shangri- La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa, opened in 2006 and is putting Oman on the map as the next must-visit country. Several other major hotel projects are under development. Most noteworthy is The Wave, an $820 million luxury residential and hotel complex scheduled to open in 2010 on prime beachfront overlooking the Gulf of Oman and conveniently located near the country’s international airport. In addition to containing four hotels, one of which will be managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, the mega-facility will feature a marina and a world-class Greg Norman golf course — the country’s first real golf facility.

"Another significant investment, Blue City in Al Sawadi, is about 90 miles north of Muscat. When completed, this $15 billion property will be the largest mixed residential and tourism development in the Gulf region. Dubai International Properties is expected to invest more than $800 million for yet another tourist and residential development at Yiti, on the coast south of Muscat. This development will include three hotels, villas, a golf course and canals leading to the nearby mountains. In the north, the Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay is the first upscale resort set among the mountains and fjords of the Musandam Peninsula. Predictably, cruise ships are discovering Oman as well. The luxury cruise line Silver Seas is anchoring at three ports to take advantage of the stunning coastal scenery and exotic culture, with stops at Salalah, Khasab, and Muscat.

"Despite these massive developments, some of which remain in the early stages, Oman is carefully cultivating a reputation for selective, high-end tourism rather than package tours. Even with its developing ports, industrial areas and tourist opportunities, Oman is avoiding development that mirrors its booming neighbor, Dubai. Looking ahead, investments in tourism and construction, along with a burgeoning real estate market, should fuel the economy and create jobs for Omanis — including women, who are allowed to drive, work if they choose and even serve in government. Oman is spending more than $3 billion to expand its international airport in Muscat and will soon have three new domestic airports. And in a public relations accomplishment, the Sultanate was named one of the world’s top 20 economically free countries.

"Muscat alone is a fascinating trip back in time. The twin forts of Jalali and Merani, built in the 16th century, overlook this port city in which even new buildings look patently Islamic. The authentic Muttrah Souk is usually bursting with an interesting array of Omani jewellery, Bedouin handicrafts, fragrant spices, and Omanis doing their everyday shopping. Muscat also has a thriving fish market, where the dazzling array of fresh fish includes some netted from coral reefs near the shore. The modern Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque accommodates 20,000 worshippers and is the only mosque open to non-Muslims. Inside, you can’t miss the famed Persian carpet, which took 600 women four years to weave.

Rounding up her report, Lydia writes that outside of Muscat, one can explore the desert, the coast, and mountains that hold old villages, forts, and wadis. Or you can simply hit the water and sail along the coastline. "There is snorkeling, game angling, and first-class diving — Oman remains one of the best-kept secrets of the diving world. Sightseeing highlights include Birkat al Mawz, a famed fortress with its well-preserved falaj (stone irrigation system); Jebel Shams, the country’s highest mountain, known as Mountain of the Sun (Oman’s Grand Canyon); Wadi Ghul, the rug-making village; Wadi Bani Awf a famed historical route through the Hajar Mountains; The ancient city of Nizwa, once the country’s capital, and today an oasis city known for its lush palms and Bahla Fort (a UNESCO Heritage site), and fine pottery."

Oman Air appointed Egypt Sales Agent

Oman Air has appointed Red Sea Aviation as its General Sales Agent for Cairo. With Oman Air's daily direct flights to Cairo, there has been a marked increase in the number of passengers travelling to Cairo from Oman.

Alraisi added "Red Sea Aviation is a tour operator and Travel Agency established in 1993. Their long-standing reputation combined with their sterling performance in tourism and travel business will not only allow us to sell airline seats but also to package attractive holiday offerings."

Commenting on the appointment of Red Sea Aviation as the carrier’s GSA for Cairo, Abdulrazaq Bin Juma Alraisi, Senior Manager Sales, Oman Air said that Cairo is an important station for us as there are many Egyptians resident in Oman who patronize Oman Air. Many Omani students attend universities in Cairo and we provide the link to their homeland. Egypt also attracts a lot of tourist visitors from Oman, as it one of the oldest civilizations of the world and offers an enigmatic peek into its rich history with pyramids forming the major attraction."

Nader Ayad, Chairman of Red Sea Aviation said “Being appointed as the GSA of Oman Air is certainly a great honour for my company. Red Sea Aviation enjoys the patronage of many reputed clients both in the corporate world as well as frequently flying individuals in Egypt. Our extensive network of branch offices in cities such as Cairo, Maadi and Alexandria with representative offices in Aswan, Luxor, Sharm Al Sheikh and Hurghada we can spread the wings of Oman Air to a large client base.”

Oman Air A330 business class Four Abreast Seating

Oman Air launched its brand new Business Class seat to be installed in its fleet of their new Airbus A330-200/300 aircraft being delivered later this year. The Muscat-based airline is investing heavily in its product and services, to match the growing reputation that Oman is receiving as an up market leisure destination as well as an increasingly important business centre.

Oman Air has just 20 seats fitted in its Business Class cabin, featuring a 4 abreast 1-2-1 layout which together with 17” video monitors gives an ambience and spaciousness that exceeds most of our competitors First Class offerings. To deliver the last word in In-flight Entertainment, Oman Air has selected the Thales i5000, which combined with the Rockwell Collins Tailwind 560 platform will provide Live TV, featuring news, sports and movie options to every seat on the aircraft. Similarly, every passenger will have access to e-mail, internet and mobile phone/laptop connectivity.
The Business Class seat was unveiled at the Oman Air stand during the ITB Berlin 2009 by the Airlines CEO, Peter Hill. Addressing media representatives and travel professionals, Hill said “today is a landmark in Oman Air’s relatively short history and we are proud to showcase the state of the art on-board products that will be fitted in all of our new wide body Airbus fleet, being introduced into service in September. In conjunction with our seat manufacturer SOGERMA, we surveyed the travel experiences of our customers, seeking their views and preferences on seating and cabin facilities. I believe that our new Business Class seat perfectly exemplifies the combination of comfort, space, design and technology”.

Barry Brown Vice President Commercial for Oman Air added. “Not only have we raised the bar in our premium cabins, a great deal of attention have been directed to the Economy cabin. Passenger comfort has been addressed by providing 34” pitch seating with three phase leg-rest positions and a 4 way adjustable headrest. Each set is complimented with 10.6” seat back video screens. The airline will launch their First Class product in July.

Middle East Is Becoming Next-Gen Aviation hub

Oman Air took part in The Second Middle East Aviation Outlook Summit held in Abu Dhabi recently. Hill was invited to participate in two panel discussions. Aviation experts, who convened to discuss the future of the Middle East Aviation industry, believe that the Middle East aviation sector is set to soar. The Summit organized by Terrapinn, a leading global business media company, unveiled results of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) report, which declared that the region will be growing while others are stagnating.

The Majority of respondents in the survey thought the biggest obstacle to ME aviation growth in the next 12 months was volatile fuel prices 65%, followed by operational efficiency 25.4%, government policy 23.8% and recruitment of pilots 20.6%. About 53% of them felt that the biggest opportunity for airlines is passenger growth from Middle Eastern countries followed by the Subcontinent, Asia, and then Europe, which is in line with the demographic make up of the region and in line with recent regulatory and route development efforts of regional players. The Terrapinn survey also showed that 60% of the respondents were of the opinion that the regional legacy carriers will face their stiffest competition from Low Cost Carriers, both regional and international. 64% of them agreed that the Middle East needs more airport capacity.

According to Capa report, whatever happens in the remainder of the world, there are still strong indications the Middle East will continue to support strong levels of traffic growth – on both long haul and short-haul point-to-point operations. The region's geographic situation is merely good fortune; but it is by adding the other two ingredients that a powerful recipe for growth is created. With new generation aircraft technology, Arab airlines now have the ability to access any point in the world non-stop. Combined with the simultaneous easing of market access, this makes one-stop global travel increasingly possible.

Further highlighting the prospects for the Gulf airlines in 2009, Capa's outlook states that the carriers in the region are "extraordinarily well positioned" to be the beneficiaries of a prolonged economic downturn. Although they too must suffer some pain, the timing of this reversal could hardly have been better. They have the potential to emerge from difficult times with their global position greatly entrenched because they are well funded and well conceptually founded the report stated.

However, the region and the Gulf in particular have shown a resilience that is absent from many other markets. Furthermore, there are indications that the premium sector has held up much better than in other parts of the world and its market share is soaring. The region is not immune to financial constraints, but well supported. The timing of this downturn probably comes at an almost ideal time for the expansion of some of the leading airlines in the region, as they consolidate their positions in a global order.
A continuing expansion of each of the Gulf carriers through negative economic conditions, while many competitors cut back, has both short and long-term implications. But, as the world economy starts to pick up, the advantages of having maintained a strenuous delivery schedule will start to show through. The region's airlines will then possess younger and more fuel efficient fleets, positioning them well to capitalise as markets resume growth," he concluded.

The Middle East airlines are expected to add 114 aircraft to their fleets in 2009 [eight per cent of worldwide deliveries] and 122 in 2010 [nine per cent of the total], whereas, most European and Asian network airlines will either reduce capacity or remain around current levels, according to a latest industry report. The report revealed that there is a lot more capacity coming on line in the region in the next two years, adding that a disproportionately large number of long-haul orders, which Boeing and Airbus have on their books, are from the Gulf.

Looking only at widebody aircraft, which are predominantly operated on long-haul international routes, Middle East airlines are taking delivery of 21% of the world's widebodies this year (50 aircraft in total) and 13% of the total in 2010. The Middle East carriers also account for 6% of worldwide narrowbody deliveries this year and 7% in 2010, presaging a surge in intra-Middle East flying in what is still an immature market.

Meanwhile, most European and Asian network airlines will either reduce capacity or remain around current levels.

Australian Press Highlights Oman Tourist Destination

It is not that often an international news agency drafts and disseminates feature reports eulogising the beauty of a destination. But it is not completely unheard of, if the destination in question truly deserves the mention. Usama Bin Karim Al Haremi, Head of Corporate Communications and Media, Oman Air highlighted the recent report sent out by The Australian Associated Press (AAP) on Oman, and was carried by various journals there.

"The report titled “Oman A Land Of Beauty”, has been prepared, and distributed by AAP, one of the leading News Agencies in the world to the journals in Australia, and also to customers through AAP’s commercial partnerships with all major international news agencies. We captured this report, which was beautifully illustrated from The West Australian newspaper. The report gives in a nutshell the unique attractions of Oman and why one should visit this country," Al Haremi said. The report starts with a Q&A-format introduction, where the reporter writes that a mention about a trip to Oman was sure to result in a sequence of questions that invariably starts with ‘where?’ You explain it runs along the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, then wait for the predictable response.

Q: What do you want to go THERE for?
A: Because it is fabulous.

Q: Isn’t it just desert?
A: No. It has mountains, fertile valleys, superb sandy beaches, fiords, a vibrant capital, exquisite Islamic architecture (including the jaw-dropping Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat), an ancient and fascinating culture that remains largely intact, an array of budget and world-class hotels and some of the best souqs in Arabia. Yes, there is plenty of desert, much of which happens to be very beautiful, plus oases, date palms, camels, ancient forts, archaeological sites, wildlife watching and plenty more.

Q: Is it safe?
A: You are quite safe in Oman, which has a very low crime rate and a population of polite, gentle people who don't hassle you and who seem genuinely happy to have you in their homeland, of which they are very proud.

Q: But what do you do there?
A: Experience all of the above without the attendant masses of tourists you get in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. If it sounds like I am sold on the Sultanate of Oman, you have it in one. It is not for every traveller. Oman is generally hot and, with the exception of the monsoon months in the remote southern region of Dhofar, dry.

Al Haremi further mentioned that The Australian Associated Press (AAP) is Australia's national news agency that holds a unique and enviable place in the media. "The work of its journalists provides the foundation stones of content in all daily newspapers in Australia; forms the backbone of radio news bulletins; and provides the background detail for talk-back radio shows and television news bulletins. AAP's domestic news coverage is complemented by alliances with the major international news agencies. In this detailed report on Oman, there is a list of must-do things and must-visit places that the reporter finds impressive," Al Haremi said. Here is a taste of what else you can do.

Muscat: Visit the Corniche at Muttrah, one of three cities that make up the sprawling, blindingly white capital of Muscat. It is an ideal starting point to get a feel for what Oman has to offer. As the name suggests, it is a crescent of coastline that is a modern working port, with a fish market, banks and hotels, yet it retains a romance that on first sight will make you catch your breath. The town is framed by a striking backdrop of bare mountains and the minarets of two beautiful mosques. At night, when the locals - the men in immaculate dishdashas and the women in beguiling, ankle-length abbayas - stroll along the waterfront to catch the sea breeze, and the mosques are lit in ethereal shades of green and red, the effect is quite magical. Half-way along the Corniche is Muttrah Souq, said to be one of the best in all Arabia. It is like plunging into a parallel universe of silks, frankincense, silver jewellery and tubs of the addictive Arab sweet halwa. Haggle all you like then take a seat, sip a glass of tea, and watch the passing costume parade.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (Muscat): Truly, this is one of the most awe-inspiring buildings in the world. Marvel at the sublime lines and symmetry, at the sheer scale of it, at the one-piece, football-field sized carpet that took 600 Iranian women four years to weave, at the crystal chandelier the size of a block of flats, at the carved wooden doors and panels, at the cool corridors of receding arches, at the superb mosaics, at the soaring minarets and sculptured gardens. It is an active place of worship, with room for 6500 in the main prayer hall alone (men only - the women have a smaller prayer hall to the side where they can watch the imam on CCTV). It is one of the few mosques open to non-Muslims, so act and dress with respect. Women must have head coverings and all visitors need to remove their shoes.

Desert Nights Camp (Central Oman): Spend a night in the fabled Wahiba Sands. Ride a camel or a dune buggy, watch the sun set from one of the surrounding high dunes or - better still - get up before dawn and watch the sunrise over the desert. The camp is the most luxurious of several offering overnight desert stays in central Oman. It is within easy four-wheel drive reach of Muscat. The falling Australian dollar makes it expensive (around $800 a couple for dinner, one night's accommodation and breakfast), but considering you are in a desert, it isamazingly luxurious. One of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Cruise the fiords: (Musandam Peninsula): Play Sinbad the Sailor for a day by cruising in an Arab dhow through the fabulous waters in the very north of the country. These adjoin the Straits of Hormuz, the strategically sensitive oil route between the Gulf States and the outside world. Watch dolphins surf the bow wave, snorkel on the reefs, marvel at the bare mountains and gaze at ancient fishing villages that remain accessible only by water.

Live like a king (Muscat): Stay a night at Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa on the coast just outside the capital. There are 680 rooms spread across three hotels: the family oriented Al Waha, the coolly stylish Al Bandar and the super-luxurious six-star Al Husn, which is perched like a fortress on the headland with a commanding view of the mountains and private resort beach. The hotels are linked by the so-called Lazy River, an aquatic travellator that you can catch at any time and be carried to your destination in blood-warm water. The ambience is of restrained opulence with service levels to match. Rooms from about $350 up to the 500sqm Royal Suite in the Al Husn. If you have to ask the rate, you can't afford it.

Head of Corporate Communications and Media, Oman Air also noted that although the main focus of AAP, like any other news agency, is on breaking news, it also distributes 'soft' news, colour stories, feature stories, opinion, filler material and photographs. "Australian Associated Press employs almost 200 journalists and photographers in 15 locations. AAP has bureaus in all Australian capital cities plus offices in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

This particular report that has been published in most of Australia’s journals also contained a segment on travel tips that gave useful information from a Western perspective to the prospective visitors to the country, Al Haremi highlighted few.

Travel Tips:

Oman is quite safe for Western travellers and presents no great health risk (the water is OK to drink, though bottled water is cheap and plentiful.
The towns have modern, sophisticated medical centres. There are English-speaking doctors and the costs for a consultation and prescription drugs are very reasonable.
English is widely spoken.
There are plenty of ATMs with international links, and most hotels have internet access.
Hire a car or 4WD to drive yourself. Otherwise, hotels or Omani tourist can put you in touch with local guides.
The up-market hotels are expensive by Australian standards, especially when you add 17 per cent tax and service to the advertised price. But you can easily get about Oman on a traveller's budget. Clean, adequate hotel rooms are available for less than $100 a double, and car hire charges are similar to home. Petrol is about a quarter the price.
If you travel independently its worth hiring a guide for a day or so to get a different perspective.

AirAsia X flight transfer service in KUL

AirAsia X now operates a flight transfer service for passengers. The new service will allow AirAsia X passengers to book their travel all the way to their end destination, when connecting between flights at the airline’s hub in Kuala Lumpur.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Paul Donovan said the new service would be well received by passengers. “This new service means passengers from Gold Coast Airport will no longer have to clear immigration in the Kuala Lumpur terminal, check their luggage in twice to connect to their onward destinations and worry about transit Visa applications.

“Suddenly, what in the past has been a time-intensive experience is now much easier, leaving passengers to focus on the excitement of their trip, without having to worry about their luggage,” Mr Donovan said. The implementation of this service coincides with AirAsia X’s ‘Bigger Than Ten Bears Sale’, with flights from the Gold Coast to Singapore for as little as $215 one way. AirAsia X’s flight transfer service is available to travellers departing from the long haul routes covering China, India, Taiwan, UK and Australia. Gold Coast Airport win Staff Service award

Gold Coast Airport has two new awards to add to the mantle after being named the Best Regional Airport Australia/Pacific and also taking out the Staff Service Excellence Australia/Pacific award at the Skytrax World Airport Awards in Copenhagen, Denmark yesterday.

Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Paul Donovan said the double award win is a significant achievement for the airport. “In particular, receiving the Staff Excellence award is just reward for our team, who continually strive to deliver the best possible service to our passengers. “We’d also like to thank our airline partners and associated staff for their continued contribution to the success of Gold Coast Airport.”“On behalf of all our staff at Gold Coast Airport, we are truly honoured to win these awards. To be held in such high esteem by our airline passengers is very humbling and we’d like to thank them for their continued support. “The awards are the result of a lot of hard work and commitment from our dedicated team of very talented people.

The World Airport Awards are based on 11.38 million survey questionnaires completed by over 100 different nationalities of airline passengers in 2010/2011, covering more than 240 airports worldwide.

Mr Donovan said the airport has enjoyed considerable passenger growth in recent years. “As the gateway to Australia’s number one tourist destination, we have designed our facilities and services to attract low cost carriers to service the insatiable demand for the Gold Coast region. “To date, our marketing and product delivery for low cost carriers has been well received with our passenger throughput continuing to grow year-on-year. We welcomed 5.4 million passengers last year, maintaining our stake as the sixth busiest airport in Aust

Gold Coast to Perth cheap fares with Jetstar

Gold Coast Airport has welcomed the new direct daily services to Perth that start today with Jetstar. The commencement of this service is a significant milestone for Gold Coast Airport, with the airport now having direct access to each capital city within Australia (outside Queensland).

Jetstar all day, every day cheap tickets between Perth and the Gold Coast start from just *$209 one way JetSaver Light fares with bookings available online at Jetstar.com.
“The commencement of this service is great news for the Gold Coast, with the commitment from Jetstar set to boost tourism numbers to the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region. “It will also provide a service to our local community needing to travel to the West Coast for leisure or business.

“Gold Coast Airport have worked hard as a team to become a significant aviation hub in Queensland, and with the realisation that we will now have flights operating to each capital city within Australia, its extremely gratifying to see that strategy pay off. “It’s exciting to open up the West Australian market directly for the people of the Gold Coast and Northern New South Wales. “Commencing a daily service to Perth clearly outlines the Jetstar’s commitment to our region and we will work collaboratively with the airline and our tourism industry partners to ensure the success of this service,” Mr Donovan said.

Tiger Airways Move to Terminal 1 at OOL

Gold Coast Airport has completed negotiations with airport operators and from 10 June 2011 all regular passenger transport (RPT) airline services will operate from the purpose-built common user main terminal, Terminal 1.

“Moving Tiger Airways to Terminal 1 means the common user check in counters, security screening area and baggage screening processes, the core of a low cost carrier terminal operation, are maximised. This will create greater efficiencies at the airport and for Tiger Airways.

Gold Coast Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Paul Donovan, said this makes full use of Terminal 1 and will provide passengers with a more pleasant flying experience. “Last year we opened our $100 million purpose built low cost carrier, common user terminal. Currently all domestic and international airline services that operate out of Gold Coast Airport, with the exception of Tiger Airways, use this terminal.

“Our internal research shows passengers using Terminal 1 have a nicer experience, given the range of retail, food and beverage outlets, more seating, as well as other facilities that enhance their travel journey. “Tiger Airways operating from Terminal 1 will also reduce passenger confusion as passengers will arrive and depart from the same terminal, regardless of which airline they are travelling with,” Mr Donovan said.

CX New Business Class Seat on B777/a330

Cathay Pacific Airways today unveiled its latest innovations in product and service at a glittering event in Hong Kong attended by more than 3,000 people.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of Cathay Pacific’s new Business Class seat – a passenger-led design that aims to refine comfort, versatility and function. Every aspect of the new product has been thoughtfully designed around the passenger’s needs, providing a space in which to sleep, dine, work, read, watch TV or simply relax.

The new seat offers both privacy and openness, with a wing-back chair that cocoons passengers in their own private area and has been carefully designed to maximise living space. The seats, which are angled to give passengers a perfect view through the windows and are ideal for those travelling with a companion, provide everything passengers need to control either their widescreen inflight entertainment system or the infinitely adjustable seat. The seat quickly converts into a bed that is one of the longest and widest provided on any commercial airline.

Inside the cabin, the new Business Class will feature artwork – all original designs - by Hong Kong artist Maria Lobo. Guests at the gala party were given a preview of Ms Lobo’s creative designs.

Seat controls Everything passengers need to control their environment is close at hand. The Entertainment Handset operates a widescreen on-demand entertainment system. A premium-car-style Seat Controller enables passengers to adjust their seat at the touch of a button - from upright, through the relax position and into a fully flat bed. The Bed The bed is one of the longest and widest provided on any commercial airline, allowing passengers to sleep in any position. The foams have been ergonomically designed to optimise comfort in the sitting position and also to promote deep sleep.

Gimpo to Macau on budget airlines

Jin Air, Korean Air’s budget airlines, has submitted an application to operate passenger flights from Seoul to Macau as early as next month, the Civil Aviation Authority of Macau (AACM) has told Macau Daily Times.
“Jin Air has submitted their application to us to fly five weekly passenger flights from Seoul starting the end of November 2010,” the AACM spokesperson said. However, the precise date cannot yet be confirmed because local authorities are still waiting for some documents. “We are pending for their submission of some missing technical documents,” she added.
Earlier this year, Jin Air’s CEO, Kim Jae-kun, said the company had plans to fly to Macau. The route, he added, would link the MSAR to Gimpo, the second airport of the Korean capital.
Currently, Air Macau flies seven times a week to the main Incheon airport, also in Seoul.
Since 2008, Jin Air has been in contact with the AACM seeking information about operations of charter flights to the SAR. The company even sent their application in June this year for charter services between Seoul and Macau for a total of eight flights from July 30 to August 23.

According to AACM’s spokesperson, Air Macau has also submitted an application to fly three weekly passenger flights to Hefei, in Anhui province, and four weekly passenger flights to Ningbo, in Zhejiang province. The flag carrier of Macau plans to fly in December, but the Civil Aviation Authority “is also pending for their submission of some missing technical documents” to allow the new routes.
Yesterday, local media quoted businessman Ngan In Leng, the president of the bankrupt airline Viva Macau, saying he had plans to start a new airline, despite his disappointment at the Civil Aviation Authority. Ngan even said he was currently waiting for the arrival of new planes, The Macau Post Daily reported.
However, AACM knows nothing about a new carrier. “Up till the present moment, we have not received any application or been contacted by any investors who are interested in setting up an airline in Macau,” the spokesperson told MDT.
This year, only one new company began flying to Macau, according to the data provided by AACM. In July, Mandala Airlines started operating three weekly passenger flights from Jakarta.
Aside from Mandala, in September, Air Macau started operating two weekly all-cargo flights respectively to Shanghai, Singapore and Bangkok.

Jet Airways Alitalia codeshare on milan flights

Jet Airways will commence daily non-stop flights from Milano Malpensa to New Delhi from December 5th, 2010 in code share with Alitalia, making Milan the twenty-fourth international destination on Jet Airways’ network.

Jet Airways’ new flight, the only one to offer a daily direct link between Italy and India will connect Milan, the fashion and design capital of the world, to historic New Delhi, the capital of India.

Effective 5th December the flights will operate to the following schedule:

Jet Airways’ and Alitalia’s guests will be able to experience the new state-of-the-art Terminal 3 of New Delhi Airport and reach over 42 destinations on Jet Airways network in India. New Delhi, thanks to its strategic geographical location between Italy and Asia, is an ideal gateway for guests from Italy to travel beyond India to other Jet Airways destinations such as Colombo, Bangkok, Kathmandu, and Dhaka. The airline will thus offer its guests a seamless travel experience when transiting at New Delhi Airport.

Rocco Sabelli, Managing Director of Alitalia, said: “We are really pleased to work with Jet Airways. This agreement represents a very important development for Alitalia. Connecting Italy with the main worldwide destinations, reinforcing our leadership position in the Italian market and our offer of intercontinental flights from Milan is a further step in our strategy. Alitalia is the first SkyTeam airline to have signed an agreement with Jet Airways”.

“I am particularly pleased with the new daily direct flight to Milano Malpensa – New Delhi operated by the largest Indian airline. This link will help to strengthen the relationships between our market, where only the North West recorded 50% of exports to India, and one of the major world powers with strong economic growth” – said Giuseppe Bonomi, Chairman, SEA Milan Airports – “Malpensa confirms its leadership in the relationship with East Asia thanks also to this new flight activated in a short time thanks our trade policy that has brought positive results: today Malpensa connects 168 destinations, reaching 86 cities outside Europe and 110 airlines”.
